Part-Time Animal Keeper - Primates

The Little Rock Zoo and the City of Little Rock is seeking a qualified Animal Keeper for Primates.  This is a Part-time position of 32 hours/week maximum.  This position works a variety of New World and Old World monkeys and will be cross-trained in gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees.  This position is part of a small team that is responsible for the daily husbandry and management of these animals.  The Little Rock Zoo has many exciting changes that will be occurring over the coming years and it’s a great time to join the Team.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

• Observes animals in assigned areas for changes in behavior, injuries or illness; reports changes and problems to supervisor, evaluates and recommends changes to maintain the highest standards of animal welfare; implements approved changes.
• Actively participates and follows training and enrichment protocols to illicit species specific behaviors; maintains detailed records.
• Prepares food and feeds animals according to established diets and assigned schedule; researches, recommends and implements approved diet changes.
• Cleans both interior holding and exhibits per SOP.
• Maintains detailed narratives and charts of animal observations, care and handling.
• Trains primates/great apes to allow for veterinary examinations or medical treatment when required
• Communicates well in both verbal and written form; and able to discuss and plan actions as a team.
• Maintains indoor holding and exhibits including climbing structures, platforms, pools and live plants.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of techniques and philosophies required to work with primate species
• Knowledge of exotic animal behavior, physiology and habitat
• Skills with computers, ability to learn new computer programs such as record keeping in ZIMS and TRACKS.
• Ability to recognize changes in animal behavior which indicate disease, injury, or a need for special handling.
• Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with members of the public, Zoo staff and volunteers, and other City employees.

Experience Required
