Position Focus:

Responsible for overseeing, training and directing a team of staff in the daily operations within the business office supporting the Department of Emergency Medicine, ensuring work is properly distributed, completed accurately and timely, resources are properly utilized and metrics are being monitored/met. Initial and main point of contact on all day to day issues for team of staff. Must be able to identify and resolve medical billing issues by analyzing clinical documentation and validate ICD-10 and CPT codes in accordance with established coding guidelines and Yale Medicine Compliance. Reports directly to the Revenue Analytics Manager on significant issues and status of team assignments, performance and/or metrics.

Essential Duties

1. Coordinates, oversees and plans work assignments, projects and priorities and distributing and monitoring the work for team members on a daily basis and throughout the day as required. Directs efforts and act as expert resource for the team in a specific area or department. Measures volume of work and projected needs to ensure timely completion of work. 2. Prepares, maintains and trains staff regarding all policies and procedures with the department. 3. Ensures deadlines are being met and escalates issues as necessary to supervisor/manager. Makes recommendations to Supervisor to improve overall performance and productivity of department, including the organizational design and structure of staff and processes to ensure efficiency and proper utilization of staff and resources. 4. Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures. Escalates issues with staff to supervisor/manager. 5. Designs and maintains tracking tools, where necessary, for monitoring workflow and productivity within department. Analyzes, documents, and makes recommendations on areas that need review with supervisor. 6. Researches and resolves all outstanding issues and inquiries as necessary. Interacts with internal/external contacts as necessary to research and resolve issues/problem, including but not limited to resources within department as well as clinical departments. 7. Evaluates employee’s performance on a regular basis and administers additional training and coaching when necessary. Discusses and escalates ongoing issues to supervisor/manager. 8. May coordinate and make recommendations on overtime requirements and staffing levels, paid time off requests, unforeseen staff coverage issues, temporary schedule changes, etc. 9. Assists in the implementation of innovative system enhancements and to coordinate training efforts within team and department. May be responsible for monitoring and scheduling current system updates and maintenance. 10. Ensures adherence to HIPAA policies and procedures. Reports issues as required. 11. Assistssupervisor/manager on projects or other duties as needed.

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's Degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Demonstrated ability to oversee the work of others, preferably in customer service.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS codes, medical terminology, and HIPPA regulations. Experience with an electronic health record and practice application systems, electronic data entry, and web-based applications and websites. Expert proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (emails and calendars).

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated knowledge of medical insurance billing procedures, third-party reimbursement methodologies and documentation/compliance requirements, government and commercial insurance rules and regulations pertaining to correct coding initiatives.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Well-developed problem-solving skills with the ability to be innovative, ability to compile comprehensive analysis of data with complex and professional reporting of results, analyze and interpret detailed reports, develop clear conclusions and summarize findings.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to work independently as well as part of a cross-functional team to plan, research and conduct projects as well as manage timelines and work to achieve common goals.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Well-developed interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills demonstrating a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy and accountability.
