Animal Operations Internship - Summer 2024

The Dallas Zoo is home to over 2,000 terrestrial and aquatic animals from nearly 600 species. Multiple internship opportunities are available in all animal areas and include working with a variety of animals including, but not limited to African ungulates, elephants, birds, carnivores, hippos, primates, reptiles, amphibians, ambassador animals, and nutrition. 
The Animal Operations Internship provides an interesting and rewarding learning opportunity for currently enrolled students (or recent graduates) at an accredited college/university in the United States interested in pursuing a career in zookeeping or animal behavior. 
The intern will work directly with animal operations staff to learn and assist with daily husbandry and habitat maintenance. Interns work 20-24 hours per week for up to 12 weeks during one of three sessions offered year-round. The Dallas Zoo will work with students on documentation needed to gain university credit for the internship. Unfortunately, we cannot provide transportation, housing, or a stipend. 
· Interns will experience and learn all aspects of animal husbandry including but not limited to: food preparation, exhibit maintenance, daily and weekly cleaning tasks, public presentations, daily enrichment, operant conditioning techniques, veterinary procedures, animal behavior observation, and record-keeping
· Participate in keeper presentations and tours, learning to interact with the public in both an educational and professional manner 
· Participate in professional development opportunities made available throughout the internship to learn about zoo operations and career planning 
· Contributes to saving animals in the wild through; reduction of waste, water, and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife-protecting actions 
· Develop an understanding of the roles AZA zoos play in conservation and saving animals in the wild 
· Perform other duties as assigned 
· Must be available 20-24 hours per week for up to 12 weeks (dependent on area) including holidays and weekends 
· Flexible, self-motivated, and a team player 
· Understand and follow oral and written instructions 
· Work safely and as instructed around animals, tools, and equipment 
· Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing 
· Establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees, and zoo guests 
· Have good observational skills 
· Able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, carry up to 50lbs, and actively work in inclement weather 
· Have a valid US driver’s license with reliable transportation 
· Must be otherwise eligible to work in the U.S. at the time of the internship 
· Pass a background check 
· Provide a current negative TB test prior to the internship start date 
· Have some computer knowledge 
· Bilingual beneficial 
· Must be currently enrolled in a college or university, master’s level student, or recent college graduate 
· Applications accepted within one year after graduation 
· Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Wildlife Biology or related major
