Veterinary Technician

The Center for Great Apes has an opportunity for a full time Veterinary Technician to support the Center’s mission by providing support for the administration of a preventive health program, medical and surgical management of cases, diagnostic laboratory and imaging capabilities, medical husbandry/animal training, and overall technical support for veterinary operations.
For 30 years, the Center's mission has been to provide a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, from the exotic pet trade, from research, or from other situations where great apes need rescue and a permanent home.
FLSA- Non-Exempt
  • Prepares for, organizes, and assist during veterinary rounds/procedures.
  • Assist veterinarian during medical procedures including set up and use of equipment and supplies, assisting with chemical or manual restraint, monitoring patients, administration of treatments, production of radiographs, sample collection, record keeping, and observation of patients during recovery, breakdown and clean up after procedure.
  • Conduct all in house laboratory analysis for hematology, chemistry, serology, cytology, parasitology, bacteriology, and proper sample handling and processing.
  • Help triage and relay information on health issues to appropriate management and Veterinarian. Prepare and relay prescribed treatments to appropriate staff. 
  • Perform emergency treatment and triage of residents in the absence of the veterinarian and under their remote direction if available.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the clinical supply inventory, including stocking and ordering; and in the proper maintenance of medical equipment, sterile supplies and surgical instruments.
  • Input laboratory and treatment data into computerized medical records.
Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations:
  • A.S. degree in Veterinary Technology or related field.
  • CVT
  • Minimum of two years of full-time paid experience.
  • Great Ape/primate experience a plus.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Proof of negative tuberculosis (TB) screening.
  • Covid and Flu immunization.
  • Pre-employment drug screening.
The Center for Great Apes is located in south central Florida in a rural area amidst orange groves and pastureland. Distance from nearby towns:  Wauchula and Avon Park are 10-15 minutes away, Sebring is 20 minutes, Lake Wales is 30 minutes, Lakeland is 60 minutes, and Orlando and Tampa are 90 minutes north.
