Brevard Zoo Chief Operating Officer

Position Overview:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the organization’s operations and plans for future development. This will occur in two phases, with the position responsibilities in the initial phase focused on optimizing guest operations at the Brevard Zoo, ensuring an exceptional guest experience, and fostering profitability with an entrepreneurial mindset.

The second phase involves overseeing all operations at two facilities; the Brevard Zoo campus, and the in-process aquarium at Port Canaveral. This position is responsible for providing broad oversight and overall supervision of the Zoo and Aquarium campuses and marketing efforts.

In both phases the COO will work collaboratively other members of the Executive Leadership Team to  evaluate and facilitate improvements in operational functions to ensure efficient and effective support of the East Coast Zoological Society of Florida. Inc. (herein after known as ECZS) strategic plan, along with efficient use of financial resources.

The COO oversees and administers requests for proposals or qualifications processes and contracts as needed. In addition to the existing responsibilities, this role requires expertise in project management, conflict resolution, data analysis, and executing changes based on data insights with an entrepreneurial focus. Familiarity with the zoo master plan is integral to aligning operations with long-term goals. As a member of Executive Leadership, the COO is expected to participate with all other team members in a collegial and collaborative manner, considering issues and making decisions from the view of the ECZS as a whole, without partiality to one’s own area(s) of responsibility. Members of the Executive Leadership Team must be able to employ systems thinking and understand that all areas of the ECZS are interrelated and dependent on one another.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer in setting and driving organizational vision and operations strategy.

  • Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth of the ECZS, implementing performance management, and annual operations planning.

  • Collaborate with other members of the Executive Leadership Team to build and maintain a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members can thrive and organizational goals are met.

  • Direct and oversee the day-to-day activities of the ECZS including on site guest experiences and revenue, attendance marketing, capital planning, and business system planning.

  • Direct and implement organizational goals, budgets and objectives and all operations of ECZS.

  • Oversee the operations of the vendors of the Zoo and Aquarium, to include SSA and Event Network.

  • Ensure the design and implementation of a long-range strategy to maintain financial health and create sustainability in a time of growth and scaling.

  • Direct and participate in negotiation and administration of contracts for major services and capital construction.

  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer on long term plans for corporate growth and evolution.

  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with Board of Directors, key customers, and other stakeholders.

  • Work in conjunction with the other officers and Aquarium and Zoo director to play a key role in staffing the new campus and setting up an effective matrix reporting system.

  • Ensure joint planning and on-going collaboration between the two campuses through direct oversight of the Aquarium and Zoo Directors, Director of Marketing and other operational directors.

  • Act on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer as needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret complex data metrics.

  • Knowledge of industry marketing best practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead strong, cohesive teams.

  • Possess exemplary ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to deliver presentations to large groups and diverse audiences.

  • Knowledge of organizational planning and researching new business ventures.

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in profit and loss management.

  • Ability to operate or learn computer software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Intacct, Paycor, Acme.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field required. Master’s degree in Business Administration, Organizational Management, or related field strongly preferred.

  • Ten (10) or more years of considerable general management experience in a major zoo, aquarium, or theme park.

  • Project Management Institute (PMI) certification strongly preferred.

  • Ten (10) or more years proven experience as Chief Operating Officer or relevant role.
