POSITION OVERVIEW

Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros encounters.

Manage the day-to-day operations of the Horticulture, Maintenance, and Construction teams by providing hands on supervision to assigned staff of tradesman and technicians.  Provide strong leadership and training for employees within the department.  Assure that projects are appropriately prioritized and safe methods are followed in the daily operation of maintenance, repair, and renovation needs of all areas, including animal habitats, buildings, and guest-accessible areas. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND RELEVANT EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED:

  • High School diploma required.
  • Minimum five (5) years horticulture, construction, and/or maintenance experience required.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience leading and supervising diverse teams with a proven track record of success in training and development of employees.
  • Must be available to work a variety of shifts including weekdays, weekends, and some evenings, as needed. 
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Proficiency in basic computer software including Outlook and Microsoft Office required.

PREFERRED/DESIRED:

  • College, vocational, or technical school studies/graduate preferred.
  • Experience with animal facilities involving major building trades preferred.
  • Proficiency in maintenance/facilities related software programs including project management software, ticket management software, and inventory management software preferred.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains the Zoo property including animal habitats, buildings, grounds, fence(s), parking areas, appliances, machinery, and vehicles. 
  • Provides leadership, prioritization, and direction for employees to build, maintain, repair, calibrate, inspect areas of the Zoo, to include Horticulture, Maintenance, Construction teams, and Volunteers.
  • Assesses and monitors the current structure of the Horticulture, Maintenance, Construction teams to ensure that the department is operating efficiently and the structure best supports future initiatives.
  • Manages and leads the day-to-day operation of the Facilities Department including management and oversight of the budgetary responsibilities, cultivation and infrastructure of strong communication throughout all levels of employees, and provides ongoing leadership, guidance, and development of the various teams.
  • Works closely with other departments to identify opportunities to improve the Zoo as a member of the Zoo’s Senior Staff. Actively participates in Senior Staff activities and provides insight regarding the relationship between the Zoo initiatives and the Facilities Department.
  • Collaborates and partners with all Zoo departments to ensure that items requiring attention or repair are being addressed.
  • Plans and implements preventative maintenance programs.  Determines priorities for repair, maintenance activities, and construction/renovation projects to maximize productivity and cost effectiveness while minimizing disruption to operations.
  • Ensures that all landscaping is continuously inspected, maintained, and replenished to ensure the aesthetic beauty and the safety of the surroundings of the Zoo.
  • Maintains compliance with regulatory controls and functions as a liaison to outside vendors and contractors. 
  • Establishes bid proposals as needed.
  • Orders necessary materials and supplies to complete given projects and assignments.
  • Oversees the performance of general maintenance duties including but not limited to exhibit repair and modification, electrical repairs and modification, plumbing repair and modification, carpentry, painting, masonry repairs and modification, automotive and equipment repair, welding, air conditioning repair, tool and equipment repair, lock repair and maintenance.
  • Performs routine inspections of the facilities and assigns needed maintenance duties as needed to staff members.  Ensures a high level of organization of Horticulture, Maintenance, and Construction related areas and project areas.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the various trades required to maintain a large zoological campus.
  • Basic knowledge of and compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to follow all Zoo standard operation procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(M) Medium Work

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects as needed to move objects.

POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:

Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.

WORK SCHEDULE:

May be required to work weekends and nights as necessary.
