General Statement of Duties

The Exhibits Coordinator supports the Museum’s mission to connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation through the production and maintenance of high quality, engaging exhibits.  This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by integrating skilled volunteers and leveraging their diverse knowledge and abilities. The Exhibits Coordinator reports directly to the Exhibits Director.


  • Creative and passionate about education.
  • High School Diploma required.  Degree or certificate in relevant field such as: Fine Arts, Industrial or Graphic Design, Architecture, Museum Studies, Science Education.
  • Five years of experience in three-dimensional exhibit preparation, preferably in a museum setting.
  • Have a working knowledge of Museum standards and practices.
  • Demonstrated creativity through artistic design.  Must have a sound knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.  Ability to work with a wide range of materials including but not limited to wood, plastics, and metals.
  • Possess skills in painting, general repairs, and carpentry.
  • Excellent shop development, fabrication, painting, building and prototyping experience.
  • Working knowledge of graphic design and camera-ready artwork.
  • Proficient with Adobe Suite, Sketch Up and other graphic design software.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized, and time management.
  • Problem solver, able to come up with creative ideas and concepts for exhibits and signage.
  • Must be able to clearly and professionally present thoughts and ideas through written and oral communication, often using sketches and drawings.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be a positive, enthusiastic representative of the Virginia Living Museum.
  • Maximize the guest experience by imagining engaging and educational exhibits, displays and signs.  Presents ideas to management for consideration.
  • Maximizes the guest experience by working with Exhibits Director planning and managing all non-live permanent and temporary exhibits, including installation, lighting, artifacts, interpretive signage, and other methods of conveying information in an engaging manner.
  • Maintenance and repair of all non-live temporary and permanent exhibits (including wall preparation, painting, finish carpentry, lighting needs, etc.) Ensures all displays and exhibits are clean and in working order.
  • Coordinate the installation, maintenance and removal of temporary rental exhibits.
  • Assist in the design, fabrication and installation of some signage/graphics/banners for the museum.
  • Manage the specialized lighting for all museum exhibits, galleries and spaces.
  • Cares for non-collection objects used for displays and exhibits.
  • Strategically utilize and manage department volunteers and their applicable skills to strengthen the Museum’s mission and commitment to the community.
  • Works with Exhibits, Education and Guest Engagement leadership team to keep abreast of new technology, trends, and guest feedback to ensure VLM exhibits remain engaging and relevant.
  • Follow museum safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Requirements

  • Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends.
  • Must be able to perceive detailed information through oral and written communication.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Physical requirements include medium work, exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must have visual acuity to be able to operate motor vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Must be able stand for extended periods of time and move about on foot to accomplish tasks.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize repetitive motions.


Experience Required

Five years of experience in three-dimensional exhibit preparation, preferably in a museum setting.
