Nutrition Center Manager

General Statement of Duties

The Nutrition Center Manager is responsible for overall Center management at the highest standards. This includes animal nutrition programs and inventory, record-keeping, cleanliness and volunteer management for the Living Exhibits Department. This position works in cooperation with the entire Living Exhibits team and other departments to maintain facility and AZA standards. This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by integrating skilled volunteers, as well as leveraging their diverse knowledge and skills. This position reports directly to the Senior Director Living Exhibits.



  • A passion for animals, their welfare and conservation and educating the public.
  • Bachelor’s degree or current progress towards it in biology or related field. Significant professional animal care experience may be considered.
  • Minimum one year of experience in general animal husbandry and/or animal nutrition and managing employees and/or volunteers.
  • Excellent reliability, communication, and observational skills.
  • Strong computer skills, ZIMS experience preferred
  • Must be self-reliant and motivated.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to remain calm, make sound decisions and provide clear directions in a crisis situation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Be a positive, enthusiastic representative of the Virginia Living Museum.

  • Support the mission and Strategic Plan initiatives of increasing impact and expanding reach
  • Enhance guest experience by engaging the public in animal nutrition, leading tours and educational programs.

Support excellent animal welfare:


  • Work directly with the veterinary and Living Exhibits staff to formulate diets that balance nutritional objectives, with husbandry and behavioral objectives.
  • Oversees the preparation of diets according to specifications.
  • Ensure The Center is clean, safe and run efficiently.


  • Accept deliveries of diet items, inspecting for freshness, quality, and contamination; reject when inaccurate or quality falls below specifications. Operate company vehicles to collect items from vendors as necessary.


  • Manage Nutrition Center budget, purchasing from approved vendors, and vendor relations.
  • Manage accurate records and charts for nutrition/ diets and cleaning.

Public Education

  • Manage all procedures designed to meet the nutritional needs of wild animals at the highest AZA accreditation standard.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of the Nutrition Center to include food (all fresh produce, meat, grain, frozen prey items, and live insects) and equipment needed by The Center.

Support excellent human welfare:

  • Collaborate with Living Exhibits Curators to develop the Nutrition Center Program.
  • Manage training, supervising, and overseeing animal care volunteers, including but not limited to: scheduling, managing training progress, evaluating performance,
  • Write and update standard operating procedures for the Nutrition Center.
  • Ensure AZA protocols and safety guidelines are followed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Requirements

  • Must be knowledgeable of USDA requirements and practices regarding food preparation and safety.
  • Must be able to maintain positive relationships with Museum vendors.
  • Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and perceive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Ability to lift and/or exert up to 50 pounds of force alone, 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be comfortable around a variety of animals.
  • The candidate must have visual acuity to be able to operate motor vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to move throughout the Museum’s building(s) and outdoor trail as needed.
  • The candidate will be subject to outdoor environmental conditions such as wind, humidity, and extreme temperatures.   


Experience Required

● Minimum one year of experience in general animal husbandry and/or animal nutrition and managing employees and/or volunteers.
