Husbandry Database Technician

This is an hourly, temporary 11-month position.  It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits. Schedule will be set upon hire, up to 40 hours per week. Occasional weekend, evening and holiday work may also be required.

Primary Purpose of the Position: The Husbandry Data Technician will oversee the daily and long-term management of the animal collection database and all associated animal records including applicable permits. Job requirements include a general knowledge of taxonomy, natural history and animal husbandry. Knowledge of animal welfare standards, wildlife laws and regulations specific to the exhibition, breeding and transport of animals, and records management best practices is essential.

Description of work:

Primary duties for this position include entering animal collection data into our inventory program for our institution. Responsibilities will include collecting data sheets and logs from staff, entering water chemistries, feedings, medical reports, and training and enrichment records into a computer database, ensuring that our facility holds all relevant and necessary state and federal permits as it pertains to the institution’s animal collection, and additional database duties as assigned. The database technician should expect to work with aquarists from various sections of the Aquarium as well as the registrar and curatorial staff. Communication with the database programmer may be expected to report system errors and to produce year end reports. Additional duties may include assistance with supply inventory, animal husbandry coverage, or other assignments. This position requires excellent communication skills, an ability to quickly learn terminology used in animal care, and attention to detail. Accurate record keeping is vital to the Aquarium’s animal collection. The candidate is also required to have a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·        General knowledge of taxonomy, natural history, animal husbandry

·        Proficiency in the use of computer operating systems and common software applications, email management, internet use.

·        Experience with database management is preferred, but not required.

·        Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Experience Required

Minimum Education and Experience: Highschool or General Education Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary

$16.00 per hour
