About the Opportunity: Established in 2021, Brown Arts Institute (BAI) is a university-wide research enterprise and catalyst for the arts at Brown that creates new work and supports, amplifies, and adds new dimensions to the creative practices of Brown’s arts departments, faculty, students, and community. Through year-round programming, research-focused courses, initiatives, collaborations, and partnerships, along with rigorous artistic and academic programs, BAI commissions and presents new work on campus, across Providence, Rhode Island, and beyond, from students, faculty, and on-campus arts groups, as well as in collaboration with forward-focused visiting artists and other performing arts organizations.
Responsibilities: The Curatorial Coordinator provides administrative support and curatorial coordination to the Brown Arts Institute’s exhibitions program. The position pro-actively organizes schedules, manages various administrative processes, and is relied upon to analyze and prepare reports to effectively support the work of the Exhibitions Director and curatorial staff. The Curatorial Coordinator manages logistics for exhibitions, events, and programs, and should have sufficient understanding of the programs, services, processes, and resources required to manage day-to-day operations and to play a role in assisting with short- and long- term planning for the David Winton Bell Gallery, specifically, and the BAI exhibitions program, broadly.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 1-2 years of related administrative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Coursework in art history or museum studies or experience in an academic or non-profit arts setting preferred

Additional physical demands and working conditions: It is important that the Curatorial Coordinator not only take proactive measures to become and remain informed about the exhibition programs of the BAI. The Curatorial Coordinator must be able to work closely with all Bell and BAI staff and constituencies, and strive to find acceptable, creative solutions to keep all parties informed, satisfied, enthusiastic, and engaged. The BAI is undergoing a period of growth and expansion, and the Curatorial Coordinator must be able to keep up with the changes of this dynamic environment. Occasional evening and weekend work is expected, as this position is a backup to ArtsCorps in the event there are scheduling or security issues which cannot be resolved through regular ArtsCorps channels.
