Education Specialist - Regular, Full Time

The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”).  The Society’s mission can be summarized as the 3 Cs: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it.  This position involves all aspect of the Zoo’s mission, as it seeks someone who has skills in animal husbandry and public speaking so as to communicate and educate about animal conservation.

It is expected for all employees to uphold the Society’s mission, its core values (respect, professionalism, resiliency, efficiency and equality) and other policies/procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and elsewhere.

SUMMARY: This position assists with the care and management of the Zoo’s animal collection that are used to educate the public, often referred to as “Ambassador Animals,” and are generally located in the Zoo’s Animal Resource Center.  The position provides education content and presentations regarding those animals as well as assist with the day-to-day operations and record-keeping associated with these animals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following in these areas.  Other duties or areas may be assigned or required

(1) ANIMAL CARE AND HUSBANDRY of “AMBASSADOR ANIMALS:’

1. Performs all aspects of day-to-day animal husbandry associated with “Ambassador Animals.”

2. Prepare animal diets and determine feeding schedules.

3. Develops and maintains all animal records, including medical, behavior, feeding, and training.

4. Develops and coordinates animal training.

5. Performs or oversees medical treatments as required.

6. Creates animal enrichment.

7. Handles a diverse collection of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds; and

(2) CARE OF “ANIMAL RESOURCE CENTER” FACILITIES:

1. Makes minor and emergency repairs to equipment in the ARC.

2. Supports the daily maintenance and operations of the facility.

3. Participates in all required safety exercises and protocols.

4. Ensures that safety practices and protocols are observed by all persons who visit the ARC; and

(3) COMMUNICATION AND KNOWLEDGE OF CONSERVATION EDUCTION:

1. Supports and/or provides educational presentations involving Animal Ambassadors throughout the Zoo.

2. Coordinates with other Zoo staff members, including those in Education, Zoo-University and AmDiv, about education content and conservation status of Ambassador Animals.

3. Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Minimum one-year animal husbandry experience in an accredited zoological institution. Experience managing volunteers and supervising youth volunteers. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. Salary Range: $28.73 – $34.80/per hour (effective 1/1/24)
