Vice President of Marketing & Public Relations

The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”).  The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it.  The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a CEO as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

Upholds the Society’s mission and core values (Respect, Professionalism, Resiliency, Efficiency and Equality) and other policies/procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and elsewhere.

SUMMARY: This position advances the mission of the San Francisco Zoological Society (“SFZS” or “Society”) by promoting and maintaining a positive image of San Francisco Zoo & Gardens (Zoo) that will enable the Zoo to maintain and build its reputation as a nationally respected leader in animal care and exhibition, conservation programs, scientific study, environmental education, and public service.  This position works with the CEO, the Board of the SFZS, and at times with third-party experts retained by the SFZS to further the mission of SFZS.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Plans, directs, and evaluates programs to enhance support of, and participation in, the institution’s activities by a wide range of audiences – visitors, students, funders, volunteers, governmental bodies.

  2. Develops marketing strategies and participates in the identification of revenue-producing opportunities.

  3. Oversees market research, advertising, and partnership programs in conjunction with the CEO.

  4. Plans, directs and evaluates external and internal communication programs, including the development of communications strategies and themes to achieve the institution’s strategic objectives, at times with assistance from SFZS outside public relations and/or branding expert.

  5. Coordinates responses to the media and other public, at times with assistance from Society’s outside public relations and/or branding expert.

  6. Responsible for departmental expenditures and prepares annual budget.  Develops department policy. 

  7. Serves as a liaison to the SFZS’ Board’s Marketing Committee.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages full-time employees in the Marketing & Public Relations Department.  Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, applicable laws, and relevant labor laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; ensuring compliance with union rules regarding seniority.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from an accredited institution, emphasis in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications or related field(s).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum ten (10) years practical experience in the marketing and communications fields with progressing levels of responsibility.  Direct work experience in a zoo or aquarium, highly desirable.

  • Minimum five (5) years of direct management experience with a proven ability to plan, organize and direct work programs and supervise staff and volunteers.

  • Strong proficiency in both oral and written communication skills and proficiency in public speaking.

  • Demonstrated experience in budget development and financial management.

  • Ability to demonstrate creativity, innovative and critical thinking.  Analytical skills required for strategic planning and exercising of independent sound judgment.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with a diversity of groups including board members, Zoo employees, members of the media and the general public.

  • Extensive on-call responsibilities and availability on evenings and weekends.

Salary Range: $115,000-$130,000
