Job Title: OCIC Field Technician                                                                 

Department: OCIC

Reports to: OCIC Field Biologist and OCIC Curator

General Job Description

The OCIC Field Technician, under the supervision of the OCIC Field Biologist, will serve to advance the reintroduction efforts of the OCIC regarding ongoing and potential future programs. All projects conducted by the Field Technician will directly correlate to the needs and goals of the OCIC, Eastern Indigo Snake Reintroduction Committee and partner organizations including The Nature Conservancy, FWC, USFWS, Coastal Plains Institute, Auburn University and others.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Live onsite at the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in Liberty County, Florida, from October-April to conduct pedestrian surveys and other associated EIS monitoring tasks
  • Record survey efforts and observations in shared location accessible to OCIC management and program partners
  • Publish findings as applicable
  • Acquire necessary supplies to perform tasks within the project scope
  • Assist OCIC Field Biologist and OCIC Director with ongoing research projects as needed
  • Assist at the OCIC when necessary, particularly between the months of April-September
  • Perform required tasks at OCIC according to OCIC Director, OCIC Curator, and OCIC Lead Protected Species Technician

Minor Duties and Responsibilities

  • Present findings at meetings and conferences as needed
  • Any related projects and duties as assigned
  • Follow all protocols and SOP’s put in place by The Nature Conservancy while utilizing their housing facilities, work areas, and working on the preserve

Basic requirements:

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Must provide a negative drug test result
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and evenings as needed


  • High school diploma is required
  • Associate’s degree or higher in biological science or other related field or equivalent experience
  • High school diploma is required
  • Experience in a zoological setting is highly desirable
  • Experience performing field work to collect data and survey for wildlife is highly desirable

Language ability:

  • Must be able to communicate with staff clearly and effectively
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries, requests or complaints from staff in a kind and courteous manner
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals
  • Must be able to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Multi-lingual is a plus

Physical demands:

  • Must be able to walk long distances in mixed terrain under variable weather conditions
  • Ability to work alone and in team-oriented environments
  • Proven effective communicator, particularly as it relates to interdepartmental and interagency communications
  • Ability to multitask with strict attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent organizational skills are required
  • Must be highly motivated and demonstrate a willingness to adapt positively to institutional change
  • General knowledge of taxonomy, natural history, native Florida ecosystems, wildlife, and animal husbandry
  • Knowledge of basic field survey practices
  • Basic understanding of wildlife laws and regulations specific to exhibition, breeding, and domestic and international transport
  • Ability to do basic math and use a scale to weigh animals in kilograms and grams
  • Demonstrate advanced abilities with Microsoft Office programs and GIS

Work Environment:

A large percentage of duties are performed outdoors in various weather conditions, ranging from rain, wind, cool to cold weather, and extreme heat and humidity. It is possible the employee will be exposed to dust and harsh chemicals that if not handled properly may present a health hazard. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
