Animal Care Specialist - Avian (Seasonal)


This position is responsible for the handling, training, and care of the avian collection under the guidance of the division supervisors at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

Essential Duties:

  1. Under the guidance of division supervisors and the Husbandry Director, this position supports the management, care, exhibition, and study of the animal collection. This position is also responsible for assisting in the daily husbandry care and maintenance of rehabilitation animals if necessary.
  1. Daily animal diet preparations, water quality testing, and routine cleaning of animal exhibits, holding pools, food preparation facilities and animal work areas.
  1. Cross trains with other husbandry staff for efficient use of staff resources as appropriate.
  1. Under direction of the division supervisors and the Husbandry Director, assist research staff in facilitation of research projects and the collection of data samples, etc.
  1. Follows established routine for animal care, food preparation, and clean up, including proper maintenance and sterilization of equipment.
  1. Maintains written and computer based records.
  1. Participates in educational presentations to visitors and the public on topics relating to animal husbandry and ASLC operations. Provides helpful, patient assistance and information to the public.
  1. Assists in unloading periodic deliveries of frozen food and maintaining freezer.
  1. Is responsible for the underwater maintenance and cleaning of the habitats.
  1. Uses verbal and written communication to effectively and succinctly communicate with supervisors, veterinary staff, and other staff members.
  1. Maintains a valid driver’s license.
  1. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and striving towards providing a high standard of service.
  1. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to be organized, self-motivated, independent, and possess a strong desire to see the completion of projects.  Exceptional time management/organizational skills; self-motivated; ability to communicate effectively with various levels in the organization.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to swim, see and hear; move about; stoop, kneel and crouch; use arms and hands; handle objects, tools and controls; and sit. Must be physically fit with a good sense of balance and ability to lift and move 50 pounds. Ability to work with and around large, wild animals.

Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Biology, Zoology, or related field. Computer skills including email, Excel, Word, and database programs.
