Director of Media and Digital Communications

The Director, Media and Digital Communications role is responsible for contributing to the robust communications efforts of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, with a focus on media relations and digital strategy. The Director works with the AZA Senior Vice President of External Affairs, to execute the communications strategy for the association.
 
Responsibilities
  • Lead AZA’s media relations and digital communications programs and execute strategies that advance association priorities
  • Manage communications team responsible for media and digital communications
  • Research and analyze reporter coverage areas, industry trends, and AZA data to develop innovative story digital content ideas
  • Serve as AZA’s spokesperson
  • Execute earned media strategy to assure public views the organization and its members favorably
  • Act as AZA staff liaison to relevant AZA committees, as appropriate
  • Work with AZA members on communications needs
Minimum Qualifications
  • 7 to 10 years of practical experience in public relations; zoo/aquarium, agency, Congressional, and conservation non-profit experience highly preferred
  • Comfortable with public speaking and communicating both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated experience with leading a media and digital team
  • Proven track record in managing public relations on cross-functional teams that work in concert with integrated government relations and marketing programs
  • Ability to write clear, impactful media materials
  • Attention to detail, deadline-focused and ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks
  • High degree of computer literacy, proficient in Microsoft Office suite, and other PR management tools
  • A keen enthusiasm for and demonstrable understanding of Web trends and technologies, and utilizing data analytics in strategic communications execution
  • Ability to interact effectively with various levels of management and other departments
  • Must be self-directed and able to work independently
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism is strongly preferred
