Summer 2024 Animal Program Intern

Internship Summary:           

The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) Conservation, Management, & Welfare Sciences department is seeking a full-time (40hrs/week), paid summer intern. The Intern will have the opportunity to assist with ongoing research projects within AZA Animal Programs including monitoring trends in species diversity and exhibit theming, collecting data on barriers to population sustainability and will work under the guidance of the Conservation, Management, & Welfare Sciences Department Staff with the opportunity to interact with various program leaders and participants. 

This internship will provide a great learning opportunity for cooperative population management, animal wellbeing initiatives, and database management, as well provide the individual with knowledge surrounding a career in the zoo and aquarium community. Additional opportunities to engage in related events (e.g., lectures, webinars, etc.) may arise and offer valuable experience. This internship is offered on a full-time basis for a 12-week duration between June to September 2024, although some scheduling flexibility is available.                                            

Scope of Work:

  • Compile, verify, analyze, and in some cases prepare summaries for data for ongoing research projects.
  • Research literature for information pertaining to research project and Population Management initiatives
  • Developing new research projects based on individual interest and experience.
  • Assist with organizing Animal Program data, associated databases, and resources
  • Work with departmental staff to write, review, and update databases, resources, and other materials related to AZA Animal Programs.
  • Assist with other duties, as assigned.


Education and work experience

  • Current college student or recent college graduate with a background and/or degree in biology, environmental science, conservation science, or another related field
  • Previous internship experience with conservation organizations (e.g. NGOs, government agencies, university programs) is a plus

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate with others to provide deliverables on an agreed upon deadline
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft suite; experience with online databases a plus
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and experience with R software package a plus
  • Strong organizational skills with strong attention to detail
