Toledo Zoo Marine Mammal Enrichment and Training Internship - Fall 2024

Reports to:          Curator of Behavior Husbandry and Wellbeing
Schedule:            Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
                              August – December 2024

Internship Overview:
This internship is designed for college students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in zoo keeping, animal behavior, animal training, or behavioral husbandry. This individual works with animal behavior and animal care staff to help develop, schedule, and evaluate enrichment, with a focus on animals within the Arctic Encounter. Conducts behavioral research to monitor animal behavior and evaluate the effectiveness of enrichment and submits reports. Regularly observes pinniped training sessions and participates in training discussions. May assist with the training of ambassador animals. Participates in workshops and discussion regarding principles of animal training and enrichment. Interacts with visitors and community members to provide information and educational experiences regarding enrichment, training and animal wellbeing.
This is a paid internship. 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Works with the Curator of Behavioral Husbandry and Wellbeing, Enrichment Program Manager, and zoo keepers to design animal enrichment that elicits natural behaviors, is based on natural history, and provides animals with choices throughout the day. 
  • Constructs enrichment items and activities for a variety of taxa
  • Conducts behavioral observations to determine the effect of enrichment on animal behavior
  • Assists with data analysis and reporting findings
  • Assists with diet preparation for pinnipeds and polar bears
  • Observes pinniped training sessions and participates in training discussions
  • May narrate sea lion shows and other demonstrations
  • May assist with training of ambassador animals
  • Represents the Animal Behavior and Wellbeing department in Zoo events and donor programs
  • Assists with behavioral research

Experience Required

• Junior or Senior in college or recent graduate with a major in Biology, Animal Behavior, Psychology, Zoology or other related field • Strong willingness to learn, positive attitude, and team mentality • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel preferred


$10.45 per hour
