Over 1,400 animals, representing over 300 species, are located throughout the lush natural habitat Zoo. Cameron Park Zoo is successful thanks to a collaboration between the City of Waco and the Cameron Park Zoological & Botanical Society working together to grow the Zoo through capital improvements, the funding of vital conservation efforts, habitat preservation, and emergency support efforts. Our programs support our mission to drive impactful change for our animals and their homes. With over 300,000 visitors annually, Cameron Park Zoo continues to grow its reach into the surrounding communities.  

Cameron Park Zoological & Botanical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing Cameron Park Zoo by rallying public and financial support; to champion the Zoo’s efforts in advocating conservation awareness and cultural enrichment through education and recreation; to enhance the Zoo’s enterprise as a survival center for native and exotic animal species; and to be an active community partner in economic development through tourism. Our work is made possible through the generous support of individual & corporate donors who share our commitment to making a positive impact in our community. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Development Director to join our team and lead efforts to cultivate, steward, and expand our donor base.

The Development Director will play a crucial role in securing financial resources to support the Cameron Park Zoological & Botanical Society’s mission and programs. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director will be responsible for managing the identification, qualification, cultivation, and stewardship of individual & corporate donors through strategic engagement and solicitation efforts, as well as designing and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies. This role will involve direct interaction with donors through various communication channels, as well as collaboration with the Executive Director to strengthen donor engagement and support fundraising initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute annual fundraising plans, including individual giving campaigns, major gift programs, corporate partnerships, and special events to meet revenue targets.

  • Develop and execute strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit individual donors through personal visits, phone calls, email/digital communication, and mail outreach.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records in the database, tracking donor interactions, preferences, and engagement history.

  • Ensure proper donor recognition and stewardship, including acknowledgment of gifts, personalized communications, and recognition opportunities.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and board members to prioritize fundraising needs, and to develop high-quality communications and engagement opportunities to strengthen donor relationships.

  • Create and implement strategies to qualify, contact, and cultivate prospective donors, including employees, external stakeholders, physicians/providers, volunteers, and community leaders.

  • Plan and execute donor stewardship events, tours, and behind-the-scenes experiences to engage donors and showcase the organization's impact.

  • Conduct grant writing and research activities to identify potential funding opportunities and support grant applications.

  • Monitor and evaluate fundraising performance, prepare regular progress reports, and recommend adjustments to strategies and tactics, as needed.

  • Manage donor communications and event invitations to ensure timely and effective outreach.

  • Work with the marketing manager to develop annual giving opportunities.

  • Work with the database coordinator to develop list pulls for mass solicitations.


  • Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, Fundraising, Business Administration, Communications/Marketing, or related field.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey the organization's mission and impact effectively.

  • Experience in grant writing, research, and donor communications.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
