Safety Coordinator
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for developing, evaluating, and managing the zoo's workplace health and safety programs. The coordinator will work directly with the Safety Manager, assessing different areas throughout the zoo and creating and developing new safety and environmental programs and policies. The coordinator will utilize their knowledge of environmental health and safety protocols to ensure all aspects of the zoo are following all AZA and legal requirements. All while building a connection of understanding, knowledge and trust with zoo's leadership, staff, volunteers and external stakeholders.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE SAFETY COORDINATOR AT JBZ
The safety coordinator will assist with planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of occupational health, safety, and environmental programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees. They will assess current safety programs and, when necessary, develop new programs, policies, and forms to improve workplace safety. This position will also maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures and coordinate with outside agencies such as police, fire, EMS, etc. All while maintaining the injury log of all work injuries in compliance with MIOSHA guidelines within HRIS system.

We are looking for someone with a strong affinity for the mission and values of the John Ball Zoo. Knowledge of OSHA guidelines, practices, and training programs. General knowledge of Occupational health and safety regulations. Ideally, the candidate is OSHA certified (OSHA 10, 30 General Industry Preferred). A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health or a related field or 3-4 years equivalent job experience.
