Job Summary: 

Lead the design of life support and water treatment systems at Monterey Bay Aquarium. Leads equipment specification and configuration process, performs engineering calculations, creates drawings and models, and interfaces with internal staff and outside consultants. Participates in relevant phases of larger departmental and organizational projects involving life support systems and other seawater systems. Trains MBA staff on the operation and maintenance of new water systems. Coordinates research projects, stays abreast of new technologies in the field of life support engineering, and integrates findings into MBA operations. Performs other duties as required.
 

Core Activities:                       

  • Define specifications for life support and water treatment system configuration, flows, filtration needs, temperature considerations, and mechanical equipment
  • Perform engineering calculations for equipment sizing and specifications
  • Conduct quality control reviews of completed designs and sign off on design functionality of new systems or system modifications.
  • Lead research efforts or projects pertaining to the design, operation, and evaluation of life support/water treatment systems.
  • Interpret trends and water quality data to identify issues with life support and water systems and opportunities for improvement, working closely with all relevant animal care staff.
  • Create 2D and 3D technical drawings
  • Attend project meetings and interface with stakeholders to understand and represent life support design within larger projects.
  • Train Animal Care and Facilities staff on the operation and maintenance of new water systems.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and developments in the field of fluid dynamics, water systems, engineering, and life support, and integrates into routine operations as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with equipment manufactures and vendors to specify equipment, coordinate services, and correct issues with existing equipment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Master’s degree in in Biological Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field OR equivalent experience in design for water systems or aquarium life support
  • 6 years’ experience in aquarium life support or other water system design and commissioning
  • Demonstrated mastery of design principles and theory as pertaining to aquarium life support systems
  • Demonstrated experience in AutoCad or similar design drawing software
  • Advanced understanding of stationary engineering standards, practices, and procedures
  • Mastery of mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration concepts as applied to aquarium systems.
  • Mastery level understanding of the chemical and nutrient components and processes of seawater, including pH, alkalinity, and the nitrogen cycle
  • Ability to analyze data quickly and translate data into operational decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and train staff in technical subjects
  • Capable of balancing a dynamic and diverse workload
  • Advanced problem solving, critical thinking and logically reasoned decision making skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

$73,600- $91,000 USD annually. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
